What I’m Reading: The Thursday Murder Club

I’ve pre-ordered the newest novel from Richard Osman in his Thursday Murder Club series. There is another mystery series with a similar name, so be sure you pick the right title. This one is called The Last Devil to Die.

The series focuses on a group of elderly people who have become unlikely friends at their retirement community. They range from a housewife to a former spy, so there is literally something for every taste.

In this novel, a local antiques dealer has been found murdered, in what looks like a professional “hit.” The local police are shoved aside by national officers, who take over the station and set the two copper characters to solving a missing horse mystery. The Thursday Murder Club (which, by the way, was named because they met on Thursdays to discuss unsolved murders) is not satisfied with the speed of the police investigation and decide to do it themselves.

The hilarious mayhem that ensues ranges from them blatantly sitting down with the local heroin dealer to ask whether or not he did it, to breaking into a warehouse to look for clues. Of course, in the end, all is resolved and everything is tied up satisfactorily, though not without a few tear-jerker scenes, as is Osman’s norm. If you like English mystery stories, humorous mystery stories, or stories about capable elderly people, buy this book–and if you haven’t read the previous novels, get started!
