Dig In and Hang On (Writing Through COVID-19)

As practically nobody’s talking about anything else, I may as well hop on the bandwagon. Writers, after all, are perfect quarantine subjects!

Here are some safe activities you can do when you’re not actually writing (or cleaning):

  1. Organize a scavenger hunt for your family. You can list some really far-out items, too. You’re a writer — I know you’ve got oddball stuff lying around your house.
  2. Have a themed movie night centered on your genre. If you write Westerns, binge-watch old John Wayne movies. Brush up on your Rom-Com if you write Romance, etc. Take notes!
  3. Turn on the marching music and exercise around the house — bonus if you have stairs to march up and down.
  4. Prepare a gourmet meal from scratch.
  5. Develop a new hobby. You can find almost anything online, from DIY lip balm kits to painting, embroidery, weaving or jigsaw puzzles. No need to rush down to the hobby store!
  6. Take advantage of the free virtual tours of museums, art galleries, and parks around the world. Escape to that country you always wanted to visit and explore their culture.
  7. Take an online class or two. MasterClass has fantastic writing tutorials, though they’re a bit pricey. You can also check out some of the YouTube offerings for writers.
  8. Whip up some new cocktails. Try something you’ve never had before. Who knows? You may have a new career as a part-time bartender.
  9. Skype with Grandma and Grandpa. Take the time to visit with family and friends you haven’t seen in awhile.
  10. Start a scrapbook. This is going to be something to tell the grandkids about and that’s for sure. Keep records of everything that’s going on, how you’re coping, what it feels like to be quarantined along with most of the world. If you’ve got kids, help them make their own scrapbooks to save for their kids to explore.
