Stay Focused On Your Work

Having trouble staying focused throughout that writing session? Here are some tips and tricks to help you out.

  1. Set a timer. Or just glance at your clock periodically. Set a time limit for your work and don’t let yourself stop writing until that time is up.
  2. Keep it short. Don’t set that timer for 2 hours, either. Try twenty to thirty minutes tops. Then you …
  3. Take a break. Get up and walk around for five minutes or so. Stretch your muscles, get a little exercise, or get a (healthy) snack. Working with short breaks keeps your brain more alert.
  4. Stay on track. Keep your eyes on the prize – you’re an author. If you need it, write some inspirational notes and post them where you can see them as you work. Remember the goal is to finish that work-in-progress.
  5. Reward yourself. Before you start, decide on a reward if you stick to your schedule. Put some money into a jar and once your work is finished, celebrate. Play some video games once the timer goes off. Go to the park and get some exercise. Whatever reward works, go for it!
